Help Build A Stronger America

As citizens of this great country, it is incumbent upon us all to help keep it strong and thriving for generations to come. But we can't rely only on government to accomplish this. Teachers, researchers and innovators are among the many groups that are helping shape this country for the future. Below are just a few of the ways you can help. Choose one (or more) today and make a difference.

Innovation

Kickstarter "is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every week, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields." Projects include, or have included, such things as a mobile classroom language truck providng computer and functional literacy services via a mobile mini-bus-classroom, traveling to local businesses, events, churches, senior living facilities, and neighborhoods to facilitate small-group classes; open source lion tracking collars to help save the dwindling lion population in Kenya, as well as protecting the livestock of the Maasai; and a low cost eye-movement tracking device to aid communication for people with disabilities, plus hundreds more.

Education

Donors Choose, an online charity connecting you to classrooms in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class. You can browse project requests and give any amount to the one (or ones) that inspire/s you. Once a project reaches its funding goal, Donors Choose delivers the materials to the school.

Environmental Preservation

Go Zero Plant-a-Tree Program. "Zero out the carbon impact of shipping your [online purchases], and do something simple yet significant to help slow global warming. Your contribution of just $2 helps The Conservation Fund® to plant new forests [throughout the United States] that absorb thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through its Go ZeroSM program. Over its lifetime, each new tree planted by the Fund will absorb more than one ton of carbon dioxide. That's enough to offset the emissions resulting from shipping a 200-pound package from Los Angeles to New York. 100% of your donation goes directly to The Conservation Fund, the nation's top-rated charity for low administrative costs, to plant trees through the Go Zero program."

CarbonFund.org offers many ways for you to reduce your carbon footprint to offset your lifestyle or just improve the world around you. Visit them today to learn ways you can help. They, too, have a tree-planting program (though it is unclear whether those trees are planted here in the U.S.).
